The Jobs the Other Two Can't Make

A data center by itself doesn't solve the jobs problem, and neither does a power plant. The third piece — controlled-environment agriculture — is what makes the community bargain real.
A data center by itself does not solve the jobs problem. A power plant by itself does not solve the jobs problem. A greenhouse might — and that is the political reality underneath the entire EnergiAcres model. The data-center industry has spent years selling communities on the size of the investment. Billions of dollars, hundreds of megawatts, millions of square feet: all impressive, and none of it something people can live inside. People live inside towns, and they ask simpler questions. Will my kid have a job here? Will this raise or lower my utility bill? Will the roads and water system be protected? Will the tax base help the schools? Or are we just hosting someone else's future?
The standard data-center answer is not good enough. Construction creates real but temporary employment, and operations create good but few permanent technical jobs — the permanent footprint is small next to the power, land, water, and incentives involved. WRI notes that data-center construction creates hundreds of well-paid but temporary jobs while full-time roles stay limited and specialized; Brookings adds that the site-selection game often pits localities against one another and weakens their leverage. That gap is the opening for the greenhouse — not as decoration, but as the employment engine.
A modern controlled-environment agriculture facility is not a hobby farm under glass; it is an industrial food-production system. It needs growers, crop technicians, irrigation and controls specialists, maintenance crews, pack-house labor, food-safety teams, logistics and procurement staff, security, HR, supervisors, and trainers. It runs year-round, and it touches schools, workforce boards, community colleges, restaurants, grocers, food banks, and regional distributors. USDA reports that CEA grew substantially in the U.S. between 2009 and 2019 — in operations and in fresh-produce output — precisely because it lets producers control temperature, light, water, and pests, and a 2025 USDA-related paper frames CEA as sitting across food, energy, water, technology, and resilience at once. A server hall is essential but invisible. A greenhouse is essential and visible. That difference is the whole political point.
Three jobs the data center cannot do alone
First, the greenhouse makes the benefit local. A data center may serve users on the other side of the planet; a greenhouse puts produce into the host region — into schools, hospitals, grocers, distributors, and food-access programs — turning a remote digital utility into something residents can hold in their hands. Second, it creates operational employment: communities understand construction booms, and they understand even better when the crews pack up and leave. A greenhouse adds a larger, continuous employment story that makes "what do we get?" easy to answer. Third, it converts waste-stream logic into visible value. The public does not need a thermodynamics lecture; it needs one plain sentence — the heat from the data center helps grow food, the water is managed, the power supports both compute and production, and the campus yields more than one thing.
The greenhouse is not there to make the data center look nicer. It is there to change the entitlement conversation.
A town that hears "we need your land and water for a data center" reacts one way. A town that hears "we are building an energy, compute, food, workforce, and infrastructure campus with measurable local outputs" reacts differently. Not automatically yes — but differently, because the benefit becomes legible and therefore negotiable. This is where most AI-infrastructure developers are weak. They understand load, lease rates, rack density, and uptime. They do not understand how a township meeting hears the word "hyperscale," why a retired millworker distrusts a tax-abatement spreadsheet, or why national-security talking points do not comfort people whose actual concern is the local water line, substation, and road.
So the jobs story has to be built, not claimed. That means training programs, public dashboards, local-hiring commitments, food-output and water reporting, and community-benefit agreements that survive the ribbon-cutting — plus honest partnerships with schools, growers, and workforce institutions. It also means telling the truth: a greenhouse will not employ everyone, and not every waste stream pencils in every climate or crop mix. But it moves the campus from single-purpose extraction toward integrated production, which is exactly what communities are asking for. Not less technology — more reciprocity. The AI economy needs places to land; the towns that host it need work, tax base, infrastructure, food systems, and a reason to believe this wave will treat them better than the last one did. The data center cannot carry that burden. The power plant cannot carry it. The greenhouse is what makes the bargain real.
